Grumpy Guy BJJ Episode 13 - Cardio Training for BJJ.
Friday Feb 02, 2018
Friday Feb 02, 2018
In this episode of Grumpy Guy BJJ we discuss Cardio Training…kind of.
We hadn’t seen or really talked to one another in about a week and a half so we talked about all sorts of random stuff while catching up. Everything from Rob feeling bad that one of his statements could be seen as being racist, crazy Uber drivers and ancient Romans using their togas to strangle the enemy (the origins of gi chokes?).
When we finally got to cardio (endurance training) here were some main principles we agreed on:
- Avoid the cardio “black hole”
- BJJ training is the best endurance training for BJJ.
- Don’t look at it as “cardio” but more of endurance training.
- Train with intention.
- Don’t over train.
- There is no one size fits all when it comes to nutrition.
- Long Slow Distance (LSD) has a place. Recovery and pacing.
- Cardio training is a mental crutch for many people.

Grumpy Guy BJJ Episode 11 - Nutrition Principles for BJJ
Friday Jan 19, 2018
Friday Jan 19, 2018
One of the things we preach a lot on the Grumpy Guy Podcast is the importance of applying principles instead of focusing on specific techniques.
And while we are usually talking about learning the art of BJJ, this mindset applies to everything in life…especially nutrition.
Between the two of us we’ve tried almost every diet out there and seen what works and what doesn’t on hundreds of others. This has given us some insights into the nutrition world that we hope will help you as well.
Some of the highlights from this episode include:
- Recap of the John Danaher interview on JRE
- Our Ashi Garami Principles workshop on Jan 20th.
- We talked a lot about different types of diets but agreed on these main principles.
- Plan out your meals so you don’t have unplanned hunger.
- Eat whole unprocessed foods.
- Eat lean proteins, veggies, and healthy fats at each meal.
- Build sound nutrition habits.
- Whatever plan you choose to go with it needs to be sustainable.
- There is no one size fits all when it comes to nutrition.

Friday Jan 12, 2018
Friday Jan 12, 2018
Respect recovery: Sleep, hydration, mobility/stretching, supplements.
Adjusting other workouts outside of BJJ.
Getting your friends and family involved.
Use a competition to help focus your training (be careful of this one as well).
Time management: Plan, communicate, and adjust your schedule to allow
you to train.
Over committing: Don’t tell everyone how much you are going to train. Just
show up!
Be patient.
Remember why you train BJJ.

Grumpy Guy BJJ Episode 9 - Lessons learned in 2017
Friday Jan 05, 2018
Friday Jan 05, 2018
While a lot of people use the new year as a chance to look forward and set goals, not as many people take advantage of the time to sit down and reflect on what they learned over the previous year.
In some cases this can be even more valuable since learning from our mistakes and successes is what will help us avoid just repeating the same 365 days over again.
Which is why we decided to sit down and talk about the lessons that we learned from 2017.
Some of the highlights from this episode include:
- Recap of our Side Control Basics Workshop.
- Answered listener question about good books to read.
- Rob’s Lessons:
Ownership and embracing struggle/starting over.
- James’s Lessons:
BJJ - Competition/ Simplify Things/ Injuries/ Lapel Power!
Fitness - Mobility/ Ramping Isometrics/ Mace Runs
Life - Working with people you like/ The Upside to your Darkside/ Extreme Ownership.

Friday Dec 29, 2017
Happy New Year to everyone, we hope that you got to close out 2017 on a great note (hopefully with some friends and BJJ!) and that 2018 is your best year on the mats yet. We've had a lot of fun being a part of your BJJ journey over the last couple months and we're looking forward to a full year of the Grumpy Guy BJJ Podcast.
In this new episode we share some of our goals for the upcoming year. Sure, New Year's Resolutions can be a bit cliche but we've both found that they can actually help a lot if you follow the advice we gave in episodes 5 and 6 about goal setting and habits.
Some highlights from this episode include:
- Talking about the upcoming Side Control Basics Workshop (which we filmed and will have available soon).
- Video games...why the old school stuff is better than the new stuff and why James makes his daughter stop reading to play video games.
- Rob's BroScience Question of the Week - How do chickens have sex?
- Rob’s New Years Goals: Reading List/ Compete 4x This Year/ Daily Check List/ NO CANDY.
- Jame’s goals: Fasting 1 X Month/ Masters Worlds/ Practice Systema Breathing/ Learn to Play the Guitar.

Saturday Dec 23, 2017
Saturday Dec 23, 2017
In this new episode of Grumpy Guy BJJ we talk about our Top 5 Training Tools for BJJ.
As we've talked about before, while time on the mat is the most important thing for your game, doing some smart strength and conditioning off the mats can help speed up your progress as well. Knowing which training tools and exercises really work and which ones are mostly hype can save you a lot of wasted time and frustration.
Some of the highlights from this episode include:
- Talking about our upcoming Side Control Basics Workshop on December 30.
- Highlights from the Lapel Guard Seminar with Prof. Lance Trippett we attended over the weekend.
- Snooze button, eating red meat and looking out for your teammates.
- Rob’s top 5 tools: mace, Indian clubs, Kbells, balance boards, BJJ belt.
- Jame’s top 5 tools: mace, Indian clubs, sand bags, barbell, BJJ belt.
- Why the TRX didn't make either of our lists.
- Why James hates kettlebells...not really but why he thinks they are overrated, especially the KB Swing.
- Why the Turkish Get Up isn't just a kettlebell exercise and which version is best for the BJJ athlete.
- Which training tool we would pick if we could only choose one to train with.
You can download this episode and follow us through Itunes, Podbean or Stitcher.
We also mentioned a lot of Steel Mace exercises in the podcast, you can find a lot of them at this YouTube playlist.
