Surviving the New Year's Resolution to Start BJJ - Grumpy Guy BJJ Episode 10

Friday Jan 12, 2018
This is the time of year when you start to see some new faces on the mats. Thanks to a lot of well-meaning New Year’s Resolutions, January tends to see a lot of new people starting BJJ.
And not all of them are brand new. A lot of people who have taken extended breaks also use this time of year as a motivation to get started again, which can pose a whole new set of problems.
Whether it’s you or some new people at your gym, the unfortunate fact is that most of these new people won’t be around in a few months. They’ll start out with good intentions, but they’ll eventually stop showing up and disappear into the “normal” world again.
But this doesn’t have to happen. There are some steps you can take to make sure that you don’t burn out and end up quitting.
In this episode of Grumpy Guy BJJ we discuss tips for helping people maintain the course, including some specific advice for getting back into BJJ after a long layoff.
Some of the highlights from this episode include:
- Getting signed up for our free BJJ Improvement Starter Kit. It includes a Ramping Iso and Tempo Training workout, our Side Control Basics Workshop, and list of Top 10 BJJ Mistakes and What to Do Instead.
- Our Ashi Garami Principles Workshop on Jan 20th.
- James’s Tips:
Frequency: Don’t over do it. 3 to 4x per week.
Respect recovery: Sleep, hydration, mobility/stretching, supplements.
Adjusting other workouts outside of BJJ.
Getting your friends and family involved.
Use a competition to help focus your training (be careful of this one as well).
- Rob’s Tips:
Take it easy: Don’t push yourself too hard right away.
Time management: Plan, communicate, and adjust your schedule to allow
you to train.
Over committing: Don’t tell everyone how much you are going to train. Just
show up!
Be patient.
Remember why you train BJJ.
Until next week…
